Quote of the Day:
“In times of change learners inherit the earth, while
the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world
that no longer exists.“–Eric Hoffer

one of the best ones yet.

I don’t get it. What would *you* like it…

Anyway it is a silly quote… just a romantic musing. There are no times of non-change. The notion of learners is unclear… because if learners require teachers then we’re screwed. Perhaps ‘self-directed’. But then again, if they are learners they woud eschew inheriting anything, because what learner wants the baggage of the past. Finally, the world exists in the past, not in the future so the learned are in fact equipped to deal with the world that does exist, just not the world that will exist in a moment from now. Yes, an all around silly quote.

It seems an odd quote, certainly, if Wikipedia’s correct in claiming Hoffer was suspicious of too rapid change and its effects on society.

On the other hand, given my friend’s interactions with academics whose heads explode at the concept of wikis, it’s a nice thought that perhaps people with open minds do win out occasionally. As opposed to the sort of fear-mongering and lashing out one sees in the Chronicle of Higher Education.
