Sounds like a Gentleman that it would have been worth knowing. A sad day is this.
Amherst College, in western Massachusetts, enrolled 438 first year students this fall, for a total student population of 1680+. I gathered the following to tell the story of the changes occurring here and now in the life of the College. [From IT Index]

Here’s a great index of a small college’s it needs. I’d love to see several tiers of colleges produce things like this.
I have to say, that if you vote for the bail-out, I am not voting for you anymore. This bail-out benefits the wealthy in the short term and supposedly supports the rest of us long term, but that’s a fiction. This is Enron 2.0. We can support the rest of use in the long term by letting these behemoth companies fail, and for the wealthy to take the losses. The people who were invested in these companies can have basic pensions guaranteed through the government should they be in significant need. Otherwise, we have to let things fail. Go read the economist’s blogosphere.

I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

In my books…. CC is just another copyright regime. Public domain is the only free content. If you don’t put it into the public domain, all you are saying is ‘restricted’. CC just says, under the terms of copyright, you can do x. Public Domain says, you can do x and whatever else you want. I also like artistic license of Perl, though it is a copyright license.
on another note, the post above has some really great content linked from it.

Student Shortcomings - Anything but Masters of Technology - OpenEducation.net
When it comes to today’s kids and their use of technology, a new report sponsored by the British Library and the Joint Information Systems Committee reveals some very interesting results. The biggest shock to many will be one that is actually quite obvious to those who work in education.

open education has a nice revealing report about student’s skills with technology.
as an online teacher, most of my students are fairly adept. they have to be to choose this way of learning, but… all students have some problems with technology as this report suggests. those problems are not the ‘plug it in and play’ variety, they are the epistemological and judgmental variety. Our students need higher order skills. However, unlike many people. I won’t say those higher order skills are related to the use computers. It is merely that they lack those skills in that arena also.

indulgence & sin « a historian’s craft
I am reading my slow, marvellous way through the Yule-Cordier edition of The Travels of Marco Polo, armed with Google Maps, Google Images, Wikipedia and the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica.
——
here is a historian who has produced/is producing a great map of marco polo’s journeys on google maps. It demonstrates what can be done with a bit of effort.
